August 2006 Newsletter: River Teifi Project

cardigan-riverTo ensure its future prosperity, Cardigan has recognised the need to adopt policies relating to the river Teifi which will ensure that river once again becomes an economic asset for the region after more than 100 years of decline. Ceredigion County Council has already invested heavily in the renewal of Cardigan town and is now committing £2.5 million to the estuary.

Since the entire estuary and the adjacent areas of Cardigan Bay are all designated as European special Areas of Conservation (SAC), the policies being adopted seek to balance the interests of boating and environment. The strap line "Boating and Nature in Harmony" has been adopted. Cardigan will not be "just another marina" but will instead offer watersports enthusiasts the simple pleasures of an unspoilt estuary.

A boating management plan has therefore been devised to be administered by the local harbour authority Afon Teifi Fairway Committee. Additional permanent and visitor moorings are being installed. Below Cardigan Castle, three serviced visitor berths will give access right in the heart of town. New landing stages and pontoons are being provided at three locations, Gwbert, St Dogmaels and Cardigan town centre. Associated private sector initiatives are expected to provide enhanced facilities for canoeing, dingy sailing and other opportunities.

Further information about the attractions of Cardigan and the Teifi is available on www.visitcardigan.com and a new web page is under development for this site specifically to advise on the newly created boating facilities coming on stream during 2006.
